How well suited are current thermodynamic models to predict or interpret the composition of (Ba,Sr)SO4 solid-solutions in geothermal scalings?

چکیده
Background (Ba,Sr)SO4 solid-solutions range among the most important scaling minerals, not only in geothermal energy production, but generally in applications involving hydrothermal brines, e.g. including petroleum production [e.g. (Todd and Yuan 1990, 1992; Kühn et al. 1997)]. Besides the general difficulties related to scale formation, like blockage of pipes, related decrease of well productivity, and disturbances in geothermal plant operation, (Ba,Sr)SO4 solid-solutions tend to incorporate natural radium isotopes (mainly 226Ra and 228Ra) to an extent that they may even become a radiological concern (Degering et al. 2011; IAEA 2003). Despite the relevance of (Ba,Sr)SO4 solid-solutions as scaling Abstract

The saturation state of the world’s ocean with respect to (Ba,Sr)SO4 solid solutions
Barite is commonly found in suspended matter in ocean waters and in marine sediments. The calculation of the barite saturation index of the world’s ocean waters has shown that the vast majority of the oceans are undersaturated with respect to pure barium sulfate, equilibrium being reached at a few locations like the Southern Ocean surface waters, deep waters of the Bay of Bengal or intermediate...

The complexation reactions between Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+ metal cations with 15-crown-5 (15C5) were studied in acetonitrile (AN)-methanol (MeOH) binary mixtures at different temperatures using conductometric method. 15C54 forms 1:1 complexes with Mg2+, Ca2+ and Sr2+ cations in solutions. The Ma2+ cati...
متن کاملDifferent routes towards oscillatory zoning in the growth of solid solutions.
Oscillatory zoning, i.e., self-formation of spatial quasiperiodic oscillations in the composition of solid growing from aqueous solution, is analyzed theoretically. Keeping in mind systems like (Ba,Sr)SO4 , we propose a one-dimensional model that takes into account the nonideality of the solid solution and the system asymmetry, in particular, reflecting itself in different solubilities for such...
متن کاملThe kinetics of nucleation of solid solutions from aqueous solutions: A new model for calculating non-equilibrium distribution coefficients
The nucleation kinetics of binary solid solutions, with general formula BxC1-xA, crystallising from aqueous solution can be described using a generalised expression for the nucleation rate: the function, J(x), in which supersaturation, interfacial free energy and other parameters of the classical nucleation rate equation are considered as functions of the solid composition. As an example, we st...

In this study, NRTL and UNIQUAC thermodynamic models were used to predict the composition of ternary mixtures of solvents+ m/o/p-cresol+ water in organic and aqueous phases. Various solvents are used for the separation of cresols from water. In this study, methyl propyl ketone, methyl isopropyl ketone, methyl butyl ketone, and methyl isobutyl ketone solvents were investigated. Intermolecular in...
